Certified Professional Coder

Certified Professional Coder Job Description

Typically works in a physician’s office. Selects proper codes to classify procedures performed, diagnostic information collected and treatment provided, and posts to patient’s medical chart. Uses ICD-10, Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and/or Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) coding systems. Duties include forwarding documentation to medical billers for processing and payment. May interact with physicians or other medical staff to clarify points of diagnosis. Requires knowledge of medical terminology and abbreviations, attention to detail, and sensitivity to confidential information. Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification is required.
